Abstract

Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving, and processing information or expressing one's thoughts and feelings orally in language. For most people, mastering speaking skills is the most important aspect of learning a foreign language. Success is measured by the ability to communicate in that language. Some students find challenges in developing speaking skills. The challenges that become a factor of students' inhibition come from internal and external problems. This study aims to explain the challenges and learning strategies in students' speaking. This study aims to provide knowledge and references to readers, especially students, teaching staff, and future researchers. This study uses a qualitative method with thematic analysis techniques. Then the results of this study stated that students' speaking problems were divided into four points, namely personal problems, social problems, linguistic problems, and environmental problems. Therefore, with this research students, teachers and related parties are expected to work together to improve student learning especially to improve students' speaking skills. Then for future researchers it is expected to be able to identify problems with other skills in learning English.
