Abstract

Silvia Ananda. 2022. Challenges And Strategies In Teaching Speaking To The Efl Learners. Interview Study. Banjarmasin: English Language Education Study Program, Islamic University of Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari. This study investigated challenges and strategies in teaching speaking to EFL learners. Public speaking is the most important skill that must be learned by English learners. The objective aims to investigate the problem areas encountered by the EFL learners in English speaking 1) and the teacher strategies to solve the problem 2). In this research, the researcher used an interview research design as research design. The research was conducted in one of the junior high schools in Banjarmasin. The participant was a junior high school English teacher who has been experienced in teaching public speaking before. The Interview was conducted face-to-face with the teacher, to analyze the interview data, obtained by the interview with both problems. In collecting the data, the researcher used two kinds of research instruments, it was as interviewing results of the research are divided into two namely challenges and strategies: challenges and strategies in teaching speaking to the EFL learners are: (1) they become nervous when they have less preparation, (2) feeling anxious about having less knowledge about the topic, (3) afraid of making mistakes, (4) suddenly forget their vocabulary due to nervousness, (5). Furthermore, linguistic aspects such as fluency, pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, and facing the naughty student during the teaching-learning process. And for the strategies are: (1) often practice and speak a lot, (2) listen to another friend, (3) read and learn vocabulary, (4) make the grub discussion to help students to speak at least at their friends, (5) maximum preparation before the lesson started.
