Abstract

Assuming that teacher still lack of attention on teaching moral values to students in the classroom through a textbook, this study aimed to analyze the overall content in When English Rings a Bell textbook for 8th grade based on moral values’ perspectives within three variables; which are dialogue focused, monologue focused, and pictorial focused. This study adopts a qualitative research method using critical discourse analysis (CDA) method as a data approach. These findings show that responsible is the most frequent value found in the textbook, following by friendliness, self-discipline, and social awareness. As for the least moral values found within the textbook are religiosity, democracy, nationalism, peace-loving, hard work, and tolerance which are found one time each. Researcher can conclude that this textbook is fulfilling all of the moral values specified by the Indonesian Ministry of Education which mentioned in the Handbook of Character Education in 2011. It can be concluded that mostly the moral values of this textbook were found in the monologue pictures which found 11 moral values in total.
