Abstract
This study explores students’ perceptions and motivations toward English e-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on second-semester students at the English Language Education Program of Universitas Islam Kalimantan Muhammad Arsyad Al Banjari Banjarmasin. The research aims to understand how students experienced online learning during the pandemic, the factors influencing their motivation, and the challenges they faced. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth insights from participants. The findings reveal that while students appreciated the flexibility and accessibility of e-learning, they encountered significant challenges, including technical issues and a lack of direct interaction with peers and instructors. Intrinsic motivation, driven by personal interest and enjoyment in learning English, was found to be a significant predictor of engagement and satisfaction. Conversely, extrinsic motivation, such as the pursuit of grades, often resulted in less sustained engagement. The study also highlights the need for improved technical infrastructure, enhanced interactivity, and better social presence in online learning environments. Recommendations include investing in reliable e-learning platforms, incorporating interactive and engaging content, fostering intrinsic motivation, and strengthening social interaction through virtual study groups and regular feedback. These insights contribute to a better understanding of the e-learning experience during the pandemic and offer practical recommendations for improving online education. Future research should address specific technical challenges and explore the impact of various interactive features on student engagement and motivation.
