Abstract
This study investigates the teaching and learning strategies in English education for both street-smart and book-smart students in the Philippines, where English is the second language. By conducting online interviews, the research explores how different learning approaches affect academic performance and engagement among these two groups. It aims to identify effective teaching methods tailored to their diverse needs, considering the common practice of mixing English with Tagalog. The study highlights the importance of understanding students' preferences and learning styles to enhance English education, emphasizing the role of student engagement and support systems in shaping effective instruction. The findings will contribute to the development of inclusive English teaching strategies for the researcher's thesis. Teachers in the Philippines employ diverse instructional strategies to cater to both street-smart and book-smart students in English learning, and mixing it in the process. For the street-smart students, they use the practical examples and interactive activities for their lessons, while for book-smart students, traditional lectures and structured exercises are much more preferred. These strategies are often used in tandem with each other so that the students have much more variety learning, while catering to both intellect types. Students' experiences reflect these preferences: street-smart students find the interactive methods engaging and relevant, whereas book-smart students benefit more from structured academic approaches. Both groups acknowledge that these varied yet mixed strategies enhance their English language skills.
