Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions of using YouTube as a medium for improving their speaking skills in English. The increasing integration of digital platforms in education, particularly video-sharing platforms like YouTube, has provided learners with abundant resources and interactive opportunities to develop language skills. This research adopts a qualitative approach, employing semi-structured interviews with students who actively use YouTube for learning speaking skills. The findings reveal that students generally perceive YouTube as a beneficial and engaging tool for enhancing their speaking abilities. Key advantages include access to diverse content, exposure to authentic language use, and opportunities to mimic native speakers' pronunciation and intonation. Additionally, students appreciate the flexibility YouTube offers, enabling self-paced learning tailored to individual needs. However, the study also identifies challenges, such as difficulties in filtering appropriate content, potential distractions, and over-reliance on passive consumption rather than active practice. Despite these challenges, students believe that YouTube, when combined with traditional learning methods, significantly supports their speaking skill development. This study concludes that YouTube is a valuable supplementary medium for learning speaking skills, provided that students use it strategically and balance it with active participation in language practice. Recommendations for educators include integrating YouTube-based activities into the curriculum and guiding students on effectively utilizing the platform for language learning purposes.
